What is a universal nylon plug?

A universal nylon plug is a polyamide sleeve inserted into a drilled hole. When a screw is driven into it, the sleeve expands and locks itself against the wall of the hole.

Why “universal”: the same plug works in solid concrete (expansion), in a hollow block (folding behind the wall) and in bricks — without switching product for each base material.

Block and stone-cladding plug — material compatibility

  • Cast concrete: maximum load performance (up to 6.2 kN failure). The preferred base for primary stone cladding.
  • Hollow black block: the classic block application — standard drilling. Suitable for interior and exterior walls.
  • Standard Ytong: drilling with a diameter smaller than the plug + 3 additional turns for proven durability.
  • Anchor-grade Ytong: suited to the M10 size (service load up to 1.0 kN). The solution for reinforced Ytong blocks.

Installation guide — stone-cladding plug / block plug

Installation in cast concrete

  1. Drill the hole: diameter matching the plug (for example 10 mm for an M10 plug) with a minimum drilling depth of 70 mm. A rotary hammer drill is recommended.
  2. Insert the plug: push the polyamide plug all the way in — this can be done by hand and with a light tap of a hammer.
  3. Drive the screw: screw the bolt in until fully tightened (the plug expands and grips firmly in the concrete).

Installation in blocks and Ytong

  1. Drill without vibration/hammer action: in low-density Ytong — drill with a diameter 1 mm smaller than the plug diameter (without using hammer mode) so as not to crush the block and to allow a strong grip.
  2. Insert the plug: insert with manual pressure. The special outer ribs of the plug grip the block walls immediately.
  3. Deep threading: after the normal threading is complete, add 3 more turns beyond the initial grip — this significantly increases pull-out resistance in the block.

What is the difference between a stone-cladding plug and an ordinary plastic plug?
A stone-cladding plug (like GX-L) is designed to withstand constant loads for decades under extreme outdoor conditions. It is laboratory-tested for shear and pull-out resistance (the two forces acting on the cladding stone), engineered for a 50-year service life, and comes with comprehensive engineering documentation and a matched screw. An “ordinary” plug bought at a hardware store usually does not meet engineering load standards, and the drying-out of its plastic can lead to the stone falling over the years.
Which plug size to choose for stone cladding — M8 or M10?
In most stone-cladding projects in Israel, engineers require the use of M10, which provides almost double the service load of the M8. The M8 size is more suitable for very light cladding, for building interiors, or for locations with base-thickness constraints.
Is GX-L effective and suitable as a plug for hollow blocks?
Absolutely. The GX-L was developed for exactly this — to be a universal block plug. It is tested and approved for use in hollow black block. Its wide threading mechanism enables a strong grip even in the thin walls of a hollow block. For particularly high loads in hollow blocks, there is also a combined version with a reinforcing disc (SET GX-L), or you can switch to a chemical anchor.
Can a stone-cladding plug be used in a drywall or interior wall?
A stone-cladding plug specializes in transferring high loads to rigid walls (concrete, stone, blocks). It is not intended or recommended for hollow drywall — for that use a dedicated drywall anchor. However, for rigid interior walls (blocks or concrete) it can certainly be used to achieve a particularly strong anchor for heavy items such as kitchen cabinets or a large television.
What is the difference between the standard GX-L and the SS316 stainless steel version?
The plastic remains polyamide (PA6) in both versions, but the screw differs: in the standard version the screw is galvanized steel, and in the stainless version the screw is SS316 (A4) stainless steel. The stainless version must be used for a stone-cladding plug located in coastal areas (because of salinity), in wet cladding, or in outdoor conditions where there is a serious corrosion risk to galvanized screws.
How deep do you need to drill to install a block plug of this model?
The required embedment depth (the part that goes into the wall) is 70 mm for all sizes in the series. Therefore a hole must be drilled to a minimum depth of 70 mm, beyond the thickness of the item you are attaching to the wall.
How do you correctly install a block plug in Ytong (aerated concrete)?
In standard Ytong (a soft, porous material), the critical rule is to drill without using hammer mode (no vibration), and with a drill bit diameter 1 mm smaller than the plug diameter (for example a 9 mm bit for a 10 mm plug). This keeps the Ytong wall from crumbling. When you insert the block plug and begin threading, the plastic is pressed firmly into the soft concrete and creates a massive lock.
Is there an Israeli standard that requires the use of a specific type of stone-cladding plug?
Israeli Standard 2378 deals explicitly with stone-cladding and anchoring systems. The standard does not name a specific brand, but it absolutely requires that the plugs used be documented, engineering-tested and approved for the required loads. Using GX-L provides contractors and engineers with all the international paperwork (ETA) and Standards Institute testing needed to comply with the standard easily.
What is the practical difference between service load and failure load?
Failure load is the weight at which the plug breaks or pulls out of the wall during a laboratory test. Service load is the maximum weight an engineer is allowed to actually design for — a figure that takes a significant safety factor into account. You should always design the project on the basis of the service load tables only.
Is a nylon plug suitable for drywall?
For light loads only. For hanging on drywall you should use dedicated drywall anchors — BA-NY, IN-CO, TAPLA or CA-PA — which lock themselves behind the board.
What is the difference between threaded and hammer-in plugs?
In a threaded plug, the screw expands the sleeve gradually and allows control over the tightening — higher load values. In a hammer-in plug, the nail is driven in with a hammer — much faster, but for light loads only.
