Everything you need to know about the ADIT GL universal nylon plug — a polyamide nylon anchor for concrete, block, brick, lightweight concrete and drywall. This guide was written by the experts at Adit Ltd.

What is a universal nylon plug and how does it work?

A universal nylon plug is a polyamide sleeve inserted into a drilled hole. As a screw is driven into it, the sleeve expands and locks itself against the wall of the hole, creating a stable, reliable connection that holds the screw in place. The plug lets you anchor a wide range of items — from shelves and light fixtures to air conditioners and wall furniture — on almost any type of surface.

The reason it is called "universal" is that the same plug works in solid concrete (by expansion), in hollow block (by folding behind the wall) and in brick — without changing product for each base material.

Guide to choosing the right plug

Choosing the right plug is critical to a successful fixing. Here is how to choose correctly for the base material:

Plug installation guide — step by step

Drill the hole — drill perpendicular to the surface at the required diameter and depth (the drill-bit diameter equals the plug's outer diameter, embossed on the plug body).
Clean the hole — use an air blower or vacuum. A clean hole lets the plug grip the walls instead of slipping on dust.
Insert the plug — push the plug into the hole; tap gently with a hammer if needed.
Drive the screw — insert the screw through the object and into the plug. The plug expands in 4 directions and locks firmly.

Frequently asked questions

Which universal plug should I choose?

TN4S — the best, with 4-way threading. GX-L — when a European ETA approval is required. GL — for general use at a lower price. TURBO JET — for light hammer-set fixings.

Is a nylon plug suitable for drywall?

For light loads only. For hanging on drywall, use dedicated drywall anchors — BA-NY, IN-CO, TAPLA or CA-PA — that lock themselves behind the board.

What is the difference between threaded and hammer-set?

In a threaded plug, the screw expands the sleeve gradually and allows control over the tightening — giving higher load values. In a hammer-set plug, the pin is driven with a hammer — far faster, but for light loads only.

What is the difference between an ordinary plastic plug and the ADIT GL nylon plug?

Nylon (polyamide) is a strong premium material, far more durable and flexible than polypropylene ("ordinary plastic"). The ADIT GL plug does not break during installation, does not dry out over time, and holds significantly higher pull-out loads.

Which screw suits which plug?

As a rule of thumb, the screw diameter should be 1 to 2 mm smaller than the plug diameter. On ADIT products, the data is embossed on the plug body for your convenience.

How do you remove an old nylon plug from the wall?

Screw a screw halfway into the plug and grip the screw head with pliers to pull it out. If the plug refuses to come out, push it deeper in with a screwdriver and fill over it with filler.

What size plug should be used in hollow brick?

In hollow block, use a plug with 4-way expansion (such as GL) that forms an expansion bond inside the internal cavity. Make sure the plug is long enough to pass the first wall of the block.

How do you know which drill-bit diameter to use?

The drill-bit diameter always equals the plug's outer diameter, which is embossed on it. Avoid drilling too large a hole ("so it goes in easily"), as this dramatically reduces the load capacity.

What if you drilled too large a hole and the plug "spins freely"?

Remove the plug, switch to a larger drill bit (for example from 8 to 10 mm), and use a larger plug and screw. In very crumbly walls, it is recommended to use a chemical anchor.

Can the same plug be used for drywall and concrete?

Yes. The GL mechanism lets it lock into concrete while, at the same time, contracting to form a "butterfly" bond behind a thin plasterboard — saving the need for different plug types.

Are nylon plugs suitable for ceiling installation?

For light items, yes. For heavy loads (ceiling fans, swings) use only metal anchors (Jumbo) or chemical anchors, for safety reasons.

Is the plug suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, polyamide 6 nylon is very resistant to outdoor conditions, but use a suitable screw (stainless steel or a rust-resistant coating) to prevent corrosion of the screw itself inside the plug.

Should a hammer drill be used in hollow block?

No. In hollow block, use rotary drilling only (no hammer action) to avoid breaking the block wall from the inside out, which would prevent the plug from locking properly.
