What is a nylon plug? Definition and explanation

A nylon plug (or plastic anchor, also known as a “wall plug”) is an essential component in the world of construction and fastening. It is a small piece, usually made of nylon, polyamide or polypropylene, that is inserted into a hole drilled in a wall, ceiling or floor.

When a screw is tightened into the plug, the plug expands and presses firmly against the walls of the hole — creating a stable, reliable connection that holds the screw in place. The nylon plug makes it possible to fix many objects such as shelves, lamps, air conditioners, wall furniture, fences, handrails, signage and sanitary fixtures — on any type of surface. The word “plug” (in Hebrew, dibel) comes from the German Dübel and is the most common everyday term for plastic wall anchors.

Step 2: determine the required load

  • Light load (pictures, small mirrors, hooks): TN4S05 – TN4S06
  • Medium load (shelves, lamps, TVs): TN4S08 – TN4S10

Step 3: choose the screw diameter and plug length

The plug length is roughly equal to the thickness of the fixture being mounted plus the embedment depth into the wall (minimum 30–50 mm inside the wall). The screw diameter must match the specified range, which is marked on the plug itself.

Nylon plug installation guide — step by step

Tools required: a hammer/impact drill (mandatory for concrete; must not be used on drywall or delicate hollow block), a drill bit of the diameter matching the plug, a blower or vacuum cleaner for cleaning, and a screwdriver.

  1. Drill the hole — drill perpendicular to the surface to the required diameter and depth.
  2. Clean the hole — use an air blower or a vacuum to remove dust. A clean hole lets the plug grip the concrete walls rather than slip on dust.
  3. Brushing (optional) — for concrete and soft materials, brushing the inside of the hole with a tube brush greatly improves contact.
  4. Insert the plug — push the plug into the hole (if it has a collar, until it rests against the wall). If it is a little tight, tap it gently with a hammer.
  5. Drive the screw — insert the screw through the object you want to hang and into the plug. As it is driven, the plug expands in 4 directions and locks firmly inside the wall.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a regular plastic plug and a nylon plug?
Both are plastic wall anchors, but nylon (polyamide) is a premium material — far stronger, more durable and more flexible than the polypropylene used in most cheap “basic” plugs. A nylon plug like the TN4S does not break during installation, does not dry out or crack over time, and holds shear and pull-out loads several times higher, which is why it is the standard for professional work.
Which screw suits which plug? How do you choose the diameter?
As a rule of thumb with nylon plugs, the screw diameter should be 1 to 2 mm smaller than the plug diameter (and the drilled hole). For example, an 8 mm plug suits a screw 4.5 to 6 mm thick. On ADIT’s professional plugs, the required screw diameter is already embossed on the plastic body of the plug, so there is no need to guess.
How do you remove an old plastic / nylon plug from the wall?
The simplest and most common method: take a screw and drive it only halfway into the old plug. Now grip the screw head with pliers or a clamp and pull the screw out — it will easily draw the plug out with it. If the plug has completely dried out or refuses to come out, you can push it deeper into the wall with a screwdriver and hammer, then fill the remaining hole with filler or patching compound.
What plug size should be used in a hollow brick or perforated block?
In a hollow brick it is highly recommended to use a plug with 4-way expansion (TN4S), which also folds and grips within the air space inside the block. For light-to-medium loads use TN4S06 or TN4S08; for heavy loads use TN4S10 to TN4S14. The key rule for hollow block: make sure the plug is long enough to pass through the first wall of the block and expand inside the internal cavity.
How do you know which drill-bit diameter to use in the wall?
The drill-bit diameter is always equal to the outer diameter of the plug, and it is clearly marked on the plug itself. For example, the TN4S08 is designed for a hole drilled with an 8 mm bit. Never drill an oversized hole “so it goes in easily,” because too wide a hole causes the plug to slip and significantly weakens its load capacity.
What do I do if I drilled too large a hole and the plug spins on empty?
This usually happens in old buildings with crumbling plaster or weak blocks. The quick fix is to remove the plug, move to a larger drill bit (for example from 8 to 10 mm), and use a correspondingly larger plug and screw. In cases of severe disintegration (“sandy” walls), it is better to switch to more professional anchoring by injecting a chemical anchor, which fills the entire cavity anew, cures to concrete and surrounds the threaded rod.
Can the very same plug be used for both drywall and concrete?
Yes. This is the huge advantage of a “universal” plug like the TN4S. Its 4-way mechanism lets it grip firmly in hard, solid materials such as concrete and, at the same time, fold and create a spreading connection (a “butterfly” grip) behind a thin sheet of drywall. This saves contractors from having to buy different types of plugs for each type of wall.
What is the difference between a universal plug and a “rosette” plug dedicated to drywall?
A universal plug (TN4S) does an excellent job on a wide range of surfaces including drywall, and is great for hanging pictures, shelves and light fixtures in modern homes where wall types are mixed. A “rosette” plug (or a metal drywall toggle) opens only in drywall and distributes the load over a particularly wide area behind the board, so it provides a higher point load when hanging unusually heavy items on a drywall wall alone. How much weight can such a plug hold in concrete?
The figures are quite surprising: with a quality nylon plug (such as the TN4S), the small 8 mm plug (TN4S08) can hold a pull-out weight of up to 170 kg in standard concrete (C20/25). A 14 mm plug (TN4S14) can carry a phenomenal load of up to 628 kg.
What are the TN4S-A and TN4S-L?
These are special versions of the TN4S series: the TN4S-A comes with an especially wide collar (wide flange) at the top of the plug, which prevents it from sinking deep into the hole in walls with soft plaster or drywall. The TN4S-L is an extra-long version designed for perforated concrete, or when you need to pass through a very thick plaster / insulation layer before reaching a solid base where the plug can expand.
Are nylon plugs suitable for installation in a ceiling?
For light items (such as small light fixtures and smoke detectors) — certainly yes. However, for hanging heavy loads from a ceiling (such as ceiling fans, swings, ladders or sports equipment, where gravity pulls directly downward), it is strongly recommended for safety to use light metal anchors (“jumbo”) or chemical anchors, because of their superior resistance to gravitational pull-out forces.
Which universal plug should I choose?
TN4S — the best of them, with a 4-way expansion thread. GX-L — when a European ETA approval is required. GL — for general use at a lower price. TURBO JET — for light hammer-set fixings.
Is a nylon plug suitable for drywall?
For light loads only. For fixing to plasterboard, use a dedicated drywall anchor — BA-NY, IN-CO, TAPLA or CA-PA — which locks itself behind the board.
What is the difference between threaded and hammer-set?
In a threaded plug, the screw expands the sleeve progressively and allows control over the tightening — giving higher load values. In a hammer-set plug, the pin is driven in with a hammer — far faster, but for light loads only.
