What is a wedge anchor (conical anchor)?

The wedge anchor (also known professionally as a conical anchor) is a steel mechanical anchor that meets a stringent European standard, manufactured through a rigorous, controlled production process. With decades of experience and installations worldwide, the wedge anchor proves its durability time and again under especially demanding field conditions.

How does it work?

The wedge anchor fastens steel structures, installations and heavy equipment to concrete through an advanced mechanical expansion mechanism. After the hole is drilled and the anchor is inserted, tightening the nut opens the lower expansion clip (the “skirt”), which is set and driven toward the cone. This action creates a strong, rigid and secure anchorage capable of carrying very high tensile and shear loads. Thanks to quick and simple installation, high reliability and enormous load-bearing capacity, wedge anchors are among the most common anchoring solutions in construction and industry.

What is cracked concrete and why does it matter?

Cracked concrete is a common engineering condition in which there is a high probability of a microscopic crack (up to 0.3 mm) forming in the tension zone of the concrete, precisely where the anchor is installed. This crack may develop as a result of tensile loads, structural settlement, temperature changes, earthquakes, or the force exerted by the anchor.

Whenever the engineering design defines the connection area as a “tension zone” or as “cracked concrete”, it is mandatory to use a wedge anchor for cracked concrete. An ordinary anchor may loosen and lose its holding power when a crack widens nearby. By contrast, a wedge anchor for cracked concrete such as the MTP-X is equipped with a special, flexible expansion mechanism that “rides” on the cone and adapts to the opening of the crack, ensuring the anchorage remains stable and durable over time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MTP and MTH?
MTP (ETA1) is approved for cracked and uncracked concrete, for C1-C2 seismic conditions, for sprinklers and for dynamic loads. MTH (ETA7) is approved for uncracked concrete only, with no seismic approval. If the design requires cracked concrete or seismic resistance, MTP is mandatory.
Which finish should you choose?
Zinc electroplated (cold galvanized) (MTP-X / MTH) for dry indoor environments. Thermal-diffusion galvanizing 30-40 micron (MTP-G) for outdoors, the seashore and humidity. Stainless steel SS316 (MTP A4 / MTH A4) for especially aggressive environments — swimming pools and the food and chemical industries.
What is a wedge anchor?
A wedge anchor is a through-fixing expansion anchor: you drill a hole, insert the anchor through the fixture, and tighten the nut. Tightening pulls the cone into the sleeve, the sleeve expands and locks the anchor into the wall of the drilled hole.
What is the difference between a wedge anchor and a conical anchor?
There is no difference. “Conical anchor” is simply the professional engineering name for a wedge anchor, describing the cone shape at the end of the bolt on which the expansion clip (the “skirt”) rides.
When should you use a wedge anchor instead of a chemical anchor?
The enormous advantage of a wedge anchor is the speed of work: once you have drilled the hole and tightened the nut to the correct torque, the anchor is immediately ready to carry a full load. With a chemical anchor you must wait hours for the material to set. For a dry, clean installation on hard, stable concrete under a tight schedule, the wedge anchor is the most economical and efficient solution.
Is it mandatory to clean the drilled hole before inserting a wedge anchor?
Yes. Although a mechanical anchor is somewhat more forgiving of dust than a chemical anchor, drilling dust at the bottom of the hole will prevent the anchor from reaching the required installation depth and may interfere with the proper opening of the expansion clip. Always vacuum or blow out the dust before inserting the anchor.
How do I know whether I need a wedge anchor for cracked concrete or a regular one?
Cracked concrete does not mean the concrete is broken to the naked eye, but that it is in a zone of tensile stress that can create micro-cracks around the anchor. According to the European standard and the new Israeli standard, most ceilings, suspended floors and areas subject to dynamic loads and earthquakes are defined as cracked concrete. Unless the structural engineer states otherwise, the safe choice is a wedge anchor for cracked concrete such as the MTP-X.
How do you correctly install a wedge anchor in concrete?
Installation is simple and takes less than a minute: 1. Drill a hole at the exact diameter of the anchor. 2. Clean the drilling dust out of the hole. 3. Insert the anchor (with the nut and washer fitted on it to protect the thread) using a hammer, up to the marked depth. 4. Tighten the nut with a torque wrench to the exact value in the manufacturer’s instructions. Over-tightening may damage the anchor or the concrete.
Is it permitted to install a wedge anchor in a block wall?
No. A wedge anchor generates enormous expansion pressure on the walls of the drilled hole. Installing it in a hollow block, a concrete-masonry block or lightweight concrete (Ytong) will cause the block to burst from the inside and the anchor will pull out easily. For blocks, use a suitable plastic plug, dedicated block anchors, or a chemical anchor with a mesh sleeve.
Is the MTP-X wedge anchor earthquake-resistant?
Yes. The MTP-X model holds the most stringent engineering approvals in Europe (ETA), including seismic approval in categories C1 and C2 — highly important for public engineering projects and infrastructure buildings.
