How does a wedge anchor (cone anchor) work?

A wedge anchor is a mechanical, through-set expansion anchor designed to fasten steel structures, equipment and heavy machinery to concrete. After drilling the hole, inserting the anchor and tightening the nut, the lower expansion clip (the “skirt”) opens, sets and is forced toward the cone. This creates a strong, rigid and secure anchorage capable of carrying very high tensile and shear loads. Thanks to quick, simple installation, high reliability and enormous load capacity, wedge anchors have served for decades as one of the most common anchoring solutions in construction and industry.

What is cracked concrete and why does it matter?

Cracked concrete is a common engineering condition in which there is a high probability of a microscopic crack (up to 0.3 mm) appearing in the tension zone of the concrete, exactly where the anchor is installed. This crack may develop from tensile loads, structural settlement, temperature changes, earthquakes, or the force the anchor itself exerts.

Whenever the engineering design defines the connection area as a “tension zone” or “cracked concrete”, it is mandatory to use a wedge anchor for cracked concrete. What is the difference between MTP-G and MTP-X?
MTP-G is identical to MTP-X in performance and approvals — the same ETA1 for cracked concrete, the same C1-C2 seismic approval, the same F120 fire rating and the same sprinkler approval. The difference is the 30-40 micron thermodiffusion galvanizing, which provides far greater corrosion resistance for outdoor, marine and humid environments.
What is the difference between a wedge anchor and a cone anchor?
There is no difference. “Cone anchor” is the professional/engineering name for a wedge anchor. The term “wedge” is common among field workers, while “cone anchor” is more common in engineering specifications and describes the cone shape at the end of the bolt, on which the expansion clip (the “skirt”) rides.
When should you use a wedge anchor instead of a chemical anchor?
The huge advantage of a wedge anchor is speed: the moment you drill the hole and tighten the nut to the correct torque, the anchor is immediately ready to carry a full load. With a chemical anchor you must wait hours for the material to cure. For a dry, clean installation on hard, stable concrete with a tight schedule, the wedge anchor is the most economical and efficient solution.
Is the MTP-G earthquake-resistant?
Yes. The MTP-G holds the strictest engineering approvals in Europe (ETA), including seismic (earthquake) approval in categories C1 and C2. This is especially important for public engineering projects and infrastructure buildings.
When must you use a 30-40 micron galvanized anchor rather than standard galvanizing?
When installation takes place outdoors, in a humid industrial environment, or in areas exposed to weather near the coastline, a standard electro-galvanized coating (about 5 micron) is not sufficient and may corrode quickly. In these cases the thermodiffusion galvanizing (Sherardizing) of the MTP-G produces a uniform, thick 30-40 micron protective layer that provides phenomenal resistance to rust and prevents structural failures for decades even in aggressive environments.
Is it mandatory to clean the drilled hole before inserting a wedge anchor?
Yes. Although a mechanical anchor is slightly more forgiving than a chemical anchor regarding dust, drilling dust at the bottom of the hole will prevent the wedge anchor from reaching the required installation depth and may interfere with the proper opening of the expansion clip against the concrete walls. Always vacuum or blow out the dust before inserting the anchor.
How do you correctly install a galvanized wedge anchor into concrete?
Installation takes less than a minute: drill a hole at the exact diameter of the anchor, clean the drilling dust, insert the cone anchor (with the nut and washer mounted to protect the thread) using a hammer to the marked depth, and tighten the nut with a torque wrench to the exact value specified by the manufacturer. Over-tightening may damage the anchor or the concrete.
Can a wedge anchor be pulled out after installation?
No. A wedge anchor is designed for permanent, one-time anchoring. Once the nut is tightened and the clip locks into the concrete, it cannot be pulled out without destroying the surrounding concrete. To dismantle a fixture, remove the nut and washer and cut the protruding part of the anchor down to the concrete surface.
Can a wedge anchor be installed in hollow blocks or Ytong?
No. A wedge anchor generates enormous expansion pressure on the walls of the drilled hole. Installing it in a hollow block, cinder block or lightweight concrete (Ytong) will cause the block to burst from the inside and the anchor will pull out easily. For blocks, use a suitable plastic plug, a dedicated block anchor, or a chemical anchor with a mesh sleeve.
