What is a wedge anchor?

A wedge anchor is a mechanical anchor for concrete used to fasten structures, installations and equipment to concrete through a mechanical expansion mechanism. After the hole is drilled and the nut is tightened, the expansion clip opens inside the concrete and creates a strong, secure anchorage capable of carrying high pull-out and shear loads.

Please note: MTH is approved for uncracked concrete only, and carries no seismic approval. If the design requires cracked concrete or earthquake resistance, switch to MTP-X.

Cracked versus uncracked concrete

What is cracked concrete (in the anchoring field)? Cracked concrete is an engineering condition in which there is a high probability of a crack of up to 0.3 mm appearing where the wedge anchor is installed after installation. This crack can develop as a result of pull-out loads in the concrete itself or as a result of the force applied by the anchor. Design offices commonly define all concrete as cracked to be on the safe side, even though this is not necessarily required.

When should you choose a wedge anchor for cracked concrete? A wedge anchor for cracked concrete should be chosen whenever the engineering design defines the connection zone as “cracked concrete”. This type of anchor is equipped with a special expansion mechanism that adapts to movements in the concrete, thereby ensuring the anchorage remains stable, safe and durable over time, even if the crack widens under load.

Frequently asked questions

How do you install a wedge anchor in concrete?
Installation is simple and fast: drill a hole in the concrete with a diameter equal to the anchor diameter, clean the drilling dust thoroughly out of the hole, drive the anchor into place with a hammer, and finally tighten the nut with a torque wrench to the value recommended by the manufacturer. Tightening causes the expansion clip to open and lock into the concrete.
What is the difference between a wedge anchor and a jumbo sleeve anchor?
While both work on the principle of mechanical expansion, a wedge anchor requires a drilling diameter that matches the thread diameter of the bolt exactly, and it is generally intended for higher loads. A jumbo sleeve anchor is wrapped in a sleeve and therefore requires drilling at a diameter larger than the bolt itself.
Can a wedge anchor be used in a block wall?
No. Wedge anchors are designed to work only in cast, solid concrete. Using a wedge anchor in hollow blocks or aerated concrete can crush the block from the inside and will not provide the required anchorage. For blocks, use chemical anchors, dedicated block anchors or suitable plastic plugs.
Can a wedge anchor be removed after installation?
Wedge anchors are designed for permanent installation and are very difficult to impossible to pull out after tightening without damaging the concrete. If an installation needs to be removed, the common practice is to remove the nut and cut the protruding thread with a cutting disc (angle grinder) down to flush with the concrete surface.
What is the difference between MTP and MTH?
MTP (ETA1) is approved for cracked and uncracked concrete, for seismic C1-C2, for sprinklers and for dynamic loads. MTH (ETA7) is approved for uncracked concrete only, with no seismic approval. If the design requires cracked concrete or seismic resistance, MTP is mandatory.
Which finish should I choose?
Cold galvanized (MTP-X / MTH) for dry indoor environments. Thermal-diffusion galvanizing 30-40 micron (MTP-G) for outdoors, seashore and humidity. Stainless steel SS316 (MTP A4 / MTH A4) for particularly aggressive environments — pools, food and chemical industries.
What is a wedge anchor?
