A flat head self-drilling screw, also commonly known as a flat head self-tapping screw (Self-Drilling Rivet Head Screw), is a self-drilling screw for steel that, instead of a protruding head (hex or pan head), has a low, flat head resembling a rivet head — combined with a drilling tip at its end. This structure lets the screw pierce the base material itself and thread into it in one continuous action, exactly like a regular self-drilling screw, but with a head suited to connections that require a low profile and a clean, aesthetic finish.

The RS series by ADIT is a classic flat head self-drilling screw, available in two material versions: RSZ — made of steel (grade C1035) with a cold-galvanized coating, suitable for steel-to-steel as well as steel-to-aluminum connections; and RS A2 — made of 304/A2 stainless steel, suitable only for connecting aluminum profiles (no risk of galvanic corrosion). * The shear resistance does not account for tearing of the profile (steel or aluminum). The designer must check the profile’s tear resistance to determine the final capacity. Using a steel screw (RSZ) for an aluminum connection may cause corrosion — for aluminum connections it is recommended to prefer the stainless version RS A2.

Quick installation guide — flat head self-drilling screw

  1. Mark the drilling point: A light tap to mark the penetration point prevents the drill tip from “slipping” at the start of rotation.
  2. Drive with an impact driver: The recommended drilling speed is 1800–2500 RPM for steel with ST3.5/ST4.8, and 1000–1800 RPM with ST4.2; in stainless steel (RS A2) the speed is lower — 1000–1500 RPM with ST3.5/ST4.8 and 600–1000 RPM with ST4.2.
  3. Drive perpendicular to the profile: Hold the driver at 90 degrees to the material with even pressure. Driving at an angle breaks the drill tip and results in a defective connection.
  4. Stop once the flat head is seated: Because the RS head is flat and low, it is easy to miss the stopping point and keep driving beyond what is needed. Stop the moment the head seats evenly against the profile surface and before it “sinks” too far into the material.

What is the difference between a flat head self-drilling screw and a hex head self-drilling screw?
A flat head self-drilling screw (such as RS) is designed with a low, flat, rounded head that suits any place where there is no room for a protruding head — for example aluminum profiles, sliding doors and windows. A hex head screw (such as ABE) requires more space but allows tightening with a wrench and a higher tightening torque. The choice between them depends mainly on space constraints and the required final appearance.
What is the difference between RSZ and RS A2?
RSZ is made of steel (C1035) with a cold-galvanized coating, and is suitable for steel-to-steel as well as steel-to-aluminum connections. How do you choose the right flat head self-drilling screw diameter?

Is a flat head self-drilling screw suitable for sliding doors and windows?
Yes, this is one of its leading applications. The low, flat head of the RS screw does not interfere with the movement of sliding parts, does not catch on sealing rubbers or tracks, and is therefore the accepted choice in the aluminum industry for frames, tracks and sliding mechanisms.
Does a flat head self-drilling screw rust? Is there a stainless version?
The RSZ version comes with a cold-galvanized coating suitable for protected environments. When installing a flat head self-drilling screw in aluminum, or in an outdoor and coastal environment, it is recommended to switch to the RS A2 304 stainless version — which does not rust and does not create galvanic corrosion against aluminum.
Can a flat head self-drilling screw be used for connecting aluminum?
Yes, but you must choose the right material: using a steel screw (RSZ) for an aluminum connection exposed to moisture may cause galvanic corrosion that will damage the connection and the aluminum over time. For long-term aluminum connections it is recommended to use the stainless version RS A2, which does not cause this phenomenon.
Why does the drill tip of a flat head self-drilling screw break or fail to drill?
In most cases this happens due to incorrect installation: driving at a crooked angle rather than perpendicular to the profile, a driver speed higher or lower than recommended in the RPM table, or an attempt to drill a profile thickness greater than allowed for the chosen screw diameter. Using cheap screws made of soft steel is another common cause of drilling failure.
What is the difference between Nrd (design load) and the characteristic failure load (Nrk)?
The characteristic failure load (Nrk) is the value at which the screw or the profile collapses in destructive laboratory tests. You must not design a project based on the failure load! Engineers divide the failure load by a standard safety factor to arrive at Nrd (the safe design load) or Nrec (the recommended service load). ADIT provides engineers with all the data required for this calculation.
Can a flat head self-drilling screw be removed and re-threaded into the same hole?
The screw can be removed, but re-threading it into exactly the same hole is not recommended. Re-threading damages the screw thread and the hole in the profile and may impair the pull-out capacity. In such cases it is recommended to move to a larger screw diameter or to place the new screw a short distance from the old hole.
