What is a Self-Drilling Screw?
A self-drilling screw combines a hardened drill point and a fastening thread in a single fastener. The point drills the hole and the thread forms the connection in one continuous operation – no pre-drilling, no separate drill bit, and no plug or resin. The ADIT AUTO is a heavy-duty girder screw built for the demanding end of that range, drilling straight into thick profiles where an ordinary self-drilling screw would stall on thin sheet.
The advantage: one pass instead of drill-then-fasten removes the cost of external drill bits and cuts fixing time by tens of percent – for lower installation cost and faster, safer, more accurate work in the field.
The AUTO is supplied in a single size, ST 5.5, with a hexagonal washer head and a cold-galvanized (zinc-plated) finish; an EPDM sealing washer can be added to any length for weather-tight fixings. Using its no. 5 girder screw point it drives straight into steel and aluminium profiles, fastening total thicknesses of roughly 1.75 mm up to 12 mm, in lengths from 32 to 100 mm. It is made of hardened carbon steel (C1035) – surface hardness above 560 HV – and is also available in commercial lacquered colours on request.

Installation Guide
1 · Mark & position
Mark the entry point with a light tap, and hold the screw perpendicular (90°) to the profile.
2 · Set the speed
Use a high-speed screwdriver – 1000–1800 rpm in steel (600–1000 rpm in stainless). Excessive speed can burn the drill point.
3 · Drill through
Let the no. 5 drill point cut fully through before the thread engages; keep the total thickness within the drill-point length or the screw can break.
4 · Seat & finish
Stop as the screw seats against the profile (max. torque approx. 10.4 Nm) – do not overtighten. An impact driver may be used only if you stop the instant it seats. With an EPDM washer, compress until the seal just spreads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pre-drill before using AUTO?
No. AUTO is a self-drilling screw – its hardened drill point cuts through the steel and the thread forms the fastening in one pass. This removes the separate drilling step and the cost of external drill bits, and speeds up installation significantly.
How thick a profile can AUTO drill and fasten?
AUTO drills and fastens steel and aluminium profiles up to 12 mm thick in a single pass (recommended total thickness roughly 1.75–12 mm). Match the screw length – 32 to 100 mm – to the joint, and keep the total thickness within the drill-point length so the point clears before the thread engages.
Does AUTO come in other diameters?
No – AUTO is supplied only in ST 5.5, in lengths from 32 to 100 mm (catalogue sizes 5.5×32, 38, 50, 60, 80 and 100). For other diameters or a different duty, see the full ADIT self-drilling range.
Can AUTO be used in aluminium profiles?
Yes. AUTO drives into both steel and aluminium profiles, and the datasheet lists separate load values for each. For fixing thin aluminium and non-ferrous sheet in corrosive conditions, the stainless ABEI is the dedicated option.
What is the difference between AUTO and BAUTO?
AUTO is carbon steel with a cold-galvanized (zinc-plated) finish, for standard use. BAUTO is the stainless / bi-metal version, for corrosive, coastal and outdoor environments where a plain zinc finish is not enough.
What is AUTO made of?
Hardened carbon steel (grade C1035) with a cold-galvanized (zinc-plated) finish and a surface hardness above 560 HV. It is also available in commercial lacquered colours, and with an EPDM sealing washer, on request.
What is the difference between Nrk and Nrd?
Nrk is the characteristic failure load – the load at which the connection physically fails in destructive testing. Nrd is the design load the engineer actually uses: Nrk divided by the safety factors required by the relevant standard. Always design with Nrd, not Nrk. The datasheet lists Nrk, Nrd and recommended (Nrec) values for both steel and aluminium.
Can the screw be reused?
A self-drilling screw forms its own thread as it is driven, so it is intended as a permanent fastening. Removing and re-driving it in the same hole is not recommended, because the formed thread and the drilled hole will not reliably re-engage.
