How Much Weight Does a Drywall Anchor Hold? Load Tables by Anchor and Board Thickness

“How long do I wait before I can load it?” Most answers online are wrong, because they give a single number. There is no single number. The curing time of a chemical anchor varies by a factor of ten or more with temperature, and doubles in wet concrete. Here are the real tables, taken from the manufacturers’ approvals.
Two different times — do not confuse them
- Gel time / working time — how long you have from the moment of injection until the adhesive begins to set. Within that window the rod must be inserted and rotated. After it, do not touch.
- Minimum curing time — how long to wait from installation until the anchor may be loaded.
Both shorten in heat and lengthen in cold. In an Israeli summer the working time can fall to two minutes.

Full cure in dry conditions: 24 hours. At sub-zero temperatures the resin itself must be at least 15 °C — meaning the cartridge is warmed, not just the concrete.

For PESF TOP the minimum resin temperature in cold conditions is 20 °C.
Chemfix 100 / Chemfix 600 — epoxy
Here the numbers look entirely different. Figures per the European approval, ETA-19/0705:

The cartridge temperature must be between 15 °C and 35 °C. In wet concrete or a flooded hole the time doubles. AC500 v4, also an epoxy, is in the same range: full cure in 8–12 hours.
The comparison worth remembering
At 20 °C, same wall, same rod:

That is a factor of twenty. Note the opposite behaviour too: with epoxy the working time barely changes with temperature (70 minutes in the cold against 18 minutes in the heat), while with the hybrid it collapses from 90 minutes to two. With epoxy you get a comfortable working time — and you pay for it in the wait.
The practical conclusion. If it has to be loaded the same day, use a hybrid or a polyester. If you have a whole night and you want high performance and chemical resistance, use an epoxy. And in winter: epoxy at 5 °C needs sixty hours — three working days. Plan accordingly.
The adhesives in these tables
The five adhesives the times on this page refer to, from fastest to slowest:
- Chemfix 200 — vinylester hybrid. 45 minutes at 20 °C; ETA and ESR approvals and a potable-water approval.
- Chemfix 100 — epoxy. The strongest and most durable, but 18 hours at 20 °C and 60 hours at 5 °C.
- AC500 v4 — epoxy for cracked concrete and seismic design, also for underwater work and for Ytong. Full cure in 8–12 hours.
- PESF TOP — styrene-free polyester. About an hour at 20 °C, and it works with an ordinary silicone gun.
- CT50Pro — polyester for concrete and blocks. The common, economical choice.
Three rules of thumb that prevent failures
1. The temperature that counts is the concrete’s, not the air’s
A shaded concrete wall on a summer morning can be at 22 °C while the air is already at 32 °C. Measure the substrate.
2. Wet concrete always doubles the time
“Wet” does not only mean after rain: wet drilling, a basement wall, or concrete that was dampened for cleaning all count.
3. In summer, work in small batches
At 35 °C you have two minutes from injection. If you drill ten holes and then start injecting, the first will have set before you reach the last. Inject and insert the rod, one hole at a time. Keep the cartridges in the shade.
The mistake that cancels out every one of these numbers
No timing table helps if the hole was not cleaned. Drilling dust prevents the adhesive from gripping the wall, and the anchor will fail at a far lower load than designed — even after 24 hours. The standard procedure: compressed air and brush, twice each, working from the bottom of the hole outwards.
Common questions
How long does a chemical anchor take to cure?
There is no single number. At 20 °C: Chemfix 200 about 45 minutes, PESF TOP about an hour, epoxy Chemfix 100 about 18 hours. In cold the times lengthen dramatically, and in wet concrete they double.
What happens if it is loaded early?
The adhesive has not reached full strength, and the anchor may pull out at a load far below the design value. Worse, movement during curing breaks the bond to the wall of the hole, and that damage is not reversible.
Why is epoxy so slow?
It is different chemistry. The epoxy reaction is slower and more controlled, and that is precisely what gives it its strength, chemical resistance and temperature stability. Speed is the trade-off.
Can curing be accelerated?
Only through temperature, and only within the limits of the approval. Do not add anything to the resin and do not heat it with a flame. The safe way is to choose a faster adhesive in the first place.
