Overview

The carbide drill bit (also known as a tungsten-carbide or “widia” bit) is a quality Milwaukee bit designed to drill cleanly through a wide range of building materials. The cutting tip is made of tungsten carbide — an extremely hard, wear-resistant material that holds its edge far longer than plain high-speed steel when working in abrasive substrates such as concrete, brick, block and natural stone.

These bits are the everyday consumable for setting mechanical and chemical anchors: the carbide tip drills the accurate, clean-walled hole into which wedge anchors, sleeve anchors, concrete screws, resin capsules and injection anchors are installed. Choosing a good-quality carbide bit directly affects hole quality, and therefore the holding performance of the anchor.

Why the drill bit matters for anchoring

The performance of any post-installed anchor depends on the hole it sits in. A clean, correctly sized hole with sound walls lets the anchor develop its full load capacity; a worn or poorly cut bit produces oversized, tapered or dusty holes that reduce holding power. A sharp tungsten-carbide bit drills faster, stays accurate over more holes, and keeps the hole diameter within tolerance — which is exactly what a reliable anchor connection requires.

For chemical anchoring, remember that the hole must also be thoroughly cleaned (blown and brushed) after drilling so the adhesive can bond directly to the concrete.

Frequently asked questions

What is a “widia” or carbide drill bit?
“Widia” refers to tungsten carbide — a very hard metal used for the cutting tip of the bit. A carbide-tipped bit stays sharp far longer than plain steel when drilling abrasive materials such as concrete, stone and masonry.
Which materials can it drill?
It is suited to a wide range of building materials, including concrete, brick, block and natural stone — the typical substrates for mechanical and chemical anchoring.
Why does bit quality affect my anchors?
Post-installed anchors rely on an accurate, clean hole. A good carbide bit keeps the hole diameter within tolerance and the walls sound, so the anchor can develop its rated load. A worn bit produces oversized or dusty holes that reduce holding capacity.
